Preserving Nairn's orchards

Over the last couple of years there has been a growing partnership between Green Hive and the Nairn Allotments Orchard Group (NAOG). With NAOG helping us to set up the Viewfield Community Orchard by supplying locally grown trees and training volunteers, and Green Hive promoting NAOG’s work and contributing rootstocks. NAOG are a group of apple enthusiasts based at Nairn’s Sandown Allotments that graft and grow local, heritage and generally useful apples, and encourage more trees to be planted in Nairn. Recently this lovely cooperation has enabled NOAG to graft scion wood from a very old local orchard that has…

Apple Tree Grafting and Pruning Workshops

They will now take their trees, and knowledge back to start their own orchard at Nairn Academy! We also had a session with Des and Robert for Green Hive volunteers, members and (potentially) future volunteers, including top tips for pruning fruit trees and how…

Community Orchard

We had a great response to our spot poll last month. Seems there’s quite a few out there interested in doing stuff to help get the orchard set up. You’ll maybe know that we received £230 from Highland Council to purchase trees. We’ve just heard that the Pebble Trust is to  make a bigger grant which will cover all the costs necessary to ensure the trees and surrounds are given the best possible start. Keep an eye on this page and our Facebook page in the coming weeks to find out more about the chances of volunteering and getting involved.
