Unique handmade items from waste plastic

Green Hive Workshop is a not for profit community workshop space in Nairn set up by volunteers to facilitate the creative upcycling of waste in the Highlands. We make hand made items from single use plastics, and other waste streams, from items collected and donated around Nairnshire and the Moray Firth. We support a diverse group of volunteers, to learn new skills, build confidence, share conversations, experiences, and support a safe and inclusive workshop environment, focused on making new things from waste.  Our waste plastics project ‘upcycles’ single use plastics into unique hand crafted items that we hope people will…

Call out for plastic!

Donate your waste plastics to the Green Hive Workshop & support reuse, before recycling. What Plastics will the Green Hive Workshop accept? Initially HDPE Plastics.  That is anything with the number ‘2’ inside the recycling logo. HDPE is one of the most widely used plastics. It comes in a huge variety of colours and it is a perfect material for our workshop projects.  HDPE includes, milk bottles & lids, many plastic pipes, domestic bathroom & kitchen product bottles, and plastic containers from supermarkets.   It would be really helpful if any plastic items you are donating have film lids and labels removed…

Setting up the Green Enterprise Workshop

We have taken occupancy of a unit in the Balmakeith industrial estate and are turning this big empty space in to a creative upcycling centre for the Nairnshire Community.  Specialising in the reforming of plastic, we hope to offer another option to consider, before recycling or landfill. But we need your help to get this space up and running! We are on the look out for some very specific items to help fit out our upcycling and plastic reforming workshop.  If you think you can help with a donation of any of the items on our workshop ‘Wish List’ please get…

Apple Tree Grafting and Pruning Workshops

The next generation of apple trees and apple tree growers have been nurtured over the last couple of weeks with our apple tree grafting and pruning workshops taking place. Nairn Academy pupils, staff and the farmer Jones Academy visited the Sandown Allotments and learned from experienced growers Jules, Des and Robert about permaculture and apple tree grafting. They will now take their trees, and knowledge back to start their own orchard at Nairn Academy! We also had a session with Des and Robert for Green Hive volunteers, members and (potentially) future volunteers, including top tips for pruning fruit trees and how…

Bumble Bags – Bag making workshops

We’re now holding fortnightly workshops, learning to make the Bumble Bags we posted about back in July. The free workshops are something of an exploration, testing out the ideal style which is easiest to make, sourcing materials, learning how to use the machines and so on. All skills are welcome whether novice or expert. We’re grateful to have both already, learning the 100 year old machines we’ve got, passing on their store of expertise and all having a good time too. In the long run we’d like to help reduce the use of plastic bags in Nairn by offering…

Programme of events at our hub space

Gradually we are making more and more use of our space at Links Studios. Hopefully our fellow tenants are getting used to us! We’ve launched a programme of events there which everyone is welcome to attend – and you can drop by when we’re open. Currently, we plan to be open on Fridays from 10 ’til 1 and then 2 until 4. Give us a call on 07453 912697 when you’re coming down. Back in July we had a coffee and cake afternoon, well attended by a chattering bunch who came up with a load of ideas for future activities…
